This image shows a dorsal view of an Io moth caterpillar, Automeris io, the larval stage of the adult Io moth. The caterpillar bears characteristic urticating spines capable of causing a painful dermatitis. Although not visible from this dorsal perspective, red and white longitudinal stripes extend along each side of the larva, serving as a useful identifying feature.
