Caption:
This historic April 1960 photograph presents the feet of two South American individuals, highlighting verrucous lesions due to podoconiosis, also known as mossy foot disease. A nonfilarial form of elephantiasis, podoconiosis results from a genetically determined inflammatory reaction affecting the lymphatic vessels following chronic exposure to irritating soils, primarily red clay soils containing volcanic deposits.
