This historic April 1960 photograph presents a close-up view of the right foot of a South American individual, highlighting a verrucous skin condition due to podoconiosis, also known as mossy foot. A nonfilarial form of elephantiasis, podoconiosis results from a genetically determined inflammatory reaction affecting the lymphatic vessels following chronic exposure to irritating soils, primarily red clay soils containing volcanic deposits.
