This historic April 1960 photograph presents a physician kneeling to examine a patient in South America with podoconiosis, also known as mossy foot. A nonfilarial form of elephantiasis, podoconiosis results from a genetically determined inflammatory reaction affecting the lymphatic vessels following chronic exposure to irritating soils, primarily red clay soils containing volcanic deposits. Note the characteristic verrucous, rough skin texture and severe edema of both feet.
