Caption:
This lateral x-ray of a patient’s left knee reveals both bony and soft tissue destruction of the joint, consistent with neuropathic arthropathy, also known as Charcot joint, resulting from tertiary syphilis. See PHIL 12606 for another view of this patient’s bony deterioration of the left knee, and PHIL 12605 for an external view of this arthritic deformity. Syphilis is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.
