Captured on the 3rd day of this illness, this photograph depicted a close intraoral view of a patient’s mouth, who had presented to a clinical setting with mucosal lesions, known as Koplik spots, seen here, on the left buccal mucosal surface, which manifested as a result of a measles infection. Koplik's spots occur 1-2 days before, to 1-2 days after the emergence of the cutaneous rash. Their presence is considered to be pathognomonic for measles, and appear as punctate, blue-white spots on the bright red background of the buccal, or cheek mucosa.
