This 1963 illustration depicts a silhouette of a young child showing the brain, spinal cord, trachea, and lungs in a case of progressive tuberculosis. A primary tuberculous lesion in the upper lobe of the right lung has disseminated Mycobacterium tuberculosis, leading to tuberculous meningitis and bilateral miliary tuberculosis involving both lungs. The organism has also spread via the lymphatic system, resulting in involvement of the mediastinal (carinal) lymph nodes.
