Captured in 1963 inside the former Communicable Disease Center, Laboratory Virus Reference Unit, this historic image depicts laboratorian Anna Hall seated at a microscope examining tissue cultures for cytopathic effects produced by an unidentified virus. Today, such work would require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, eye protection, and a fitted face mask to reduce the risk of exposure to infectious viral agents.
