Captured in 1963 inside the former Communicable Disease Center Enterovirus Diagnostic Laboratory, this historic image depicts staff performing inoculation and subsequent microscopic examination of tissue culture tubes while recording their observations. The laboratory technicians, seated from left to right, are Frances K. Richardson, Nancy Brown, Barbara Jane Currie, and Patricia Bingham. Today, such work would require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, eye protection, and a fitted face mask to reduce the risk of exposure to infectious viral agents.
