This photomicrograph of a horse blood smear viewed under oil immersion reveals the presence of Babesia caballi protozoa. B. caballi causes equine babesiosis, also referred to as equine piroplasmosis. In this view, two oblong B. caballi organisms are visible within a single erythrocyte near the center of the field.
