This anterior view shows a newborn infant with congenital syphilis, caused by the bacterial spirochete Treponema pallidum. Note the characteristic accumulation of hemorrhagic perinasal exudate, accompanied by a malformation of the nasal anatomy, with two sets of nares present at birth. Perioral fissures and erythematous desquamative lesions of the palms, also common manifestations of congenital syphilis, are present.
