This 1963 photograph, taken in Puerto Rico, shows local residents awaiting administration of a skin test used to detect prior infection with Schistosoma spp. trematodes. Individuals previously infected would have developed antibodies to the parasite. Following the intradermal injection of Schistosoma antigen, a positive test result is indicated by an immunologic response, typically manifested as an erythematous wheal at the injection site.
