This photograph, captured in New Mexico in a clinical setting, presents a view of the face and upper body of a 10-month-old American Indian infant. The image highlights numerous cutaneous lesions involving the nose, lips, and chin on the fifth day of the outbreak, attributed to herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). HSV-1 is the etiologic agent most commonly associated with oral lesions, often referred to as cold sores or fever blisters, and more technically termed recurrent herpes labialis.
