Caption:
Under 1500X magnification, this hematoxylin-eosin (H&E)-stained liver tissue photomicrograph reveals histopathologic features observed in a case of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), also known as South American blastomycosis, caused by a fungal organism of the genus Paracoccidioides. Note the characteristic “captain’s wheel” formation, consisting of multiple budding cells attached by narrow bases to a large, centrally located yeast-form cell.
