Caption:
This image shows two American dog ticks, Dermacentor variabilis, with a male on the left and a female on the right. This superior view of each tick’s scutum (dorsal shield) demonstrates that the male’s scutum covers the entire dorsal abdomen, whereas in the female it covers only a portion. The ticks are positioned atop blades of grass with forelegs outstretched, a posture consistent with host-seeking behavior.
