This 1981 photograph depicts an aerial view of three-cell oxidation ponds in the countryside of Maddock, North Dakota. Also referred to as lagoons or stabilization ponds, these systems treat wastewater through interactions among sunlight, bacteria, and algae. They can also serve as breeding habitats for mosquitoes. This image was captured for a project entitled “Surveillance and Habitat - Types of Mosquitoes of Public Health Importance”.
