These four test tubes contain lysine iron agar, each inoculated as a stab culture, from left to right, with Proteus sp., Providencia sp., Shigella sp., and Escherichia coli. Lysine iron agar is used to detect lysine decarboxylation and deamination, as well as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production, in the identification of enteric organisms.
