This photomicrograph shows rat spleen tissue exhibiting extramedullary hematopoiesis. The animal had been fed a high-fat diet and exposed to DDT since weaning. Numerous megakaryocytes, the precursor cells of blood platelets, are present, along with developing red and white blood cell precursors.
