This photomicrograph of a rat spleen tissue specimen highlights extramedullary hematopoiesis. The animal had been fed a high-fat diet and exposed to DDT since weaning. Also noted are numerous megakaryocytes, precursor cells of platelets, along with red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) precursors.
