This photomicrograph, captured at a magnification of 72X, shows a section of heart muscle from a patient with rheumatic heart disease, demonstrating focal interstitial inflammatory changes characteristic of rheumatic myocarditis following streptococcal infection caused by bacteria of the genus Streptococcus. The tissue was obtained from the auricular appendage during a commissurotomy.
