This photomicrograph, captured at a magnification of 288X, shows a section of heart muscle from a patient with rheumatic heart disease, demonstrating a focal inflammatory lesion consistent with an Aschoff body, characteristic of rheumatic myocarditis following streptococcal infection caused by bacteria of the genus Streptococcus. The tissue was obtained from the auricular appendage during a commissurotomy.
