This photomicrograph, captured at a magnification of 72X, shows a section of heart muscle from a patient with rheumatic heart disease, demonstrating interstitial fibrosis consistent with prior streptococcal infection caused by bacteria of the genus Streptococcus. The tissue was obtained from the auricular appendage and includes areas of sectioning artifact.
