Caption:
This historic image from 1960, depicted a nurse and physician, in the process of examining a patient, who was lying in a tank respirator, formerly referred to as an iron lung, during the Rhode Island polio epidemic. The iron lung encased the thoracic cavity externally in an airtight chamber. The chamber was used to create a negative pressure around the thoracic cavity, thereby, causing air to rush into the lungs to equalize intrathoracic pressure.
