This historic image from 1979 depicts an opened Ames Sera-Tek Treponemal Antibody Test package. Its contents were used to perform a microhemagglutination assay for antibodies to T. pallidum (MHA-TP). The MHA-TP assay confirms the presence of treponemal antibodies in a patient’s serum as part of a serodiagnostic procedure. In this view, the vial of absorbing diluent is the featured kit component, labeled with a capital “A.” The absorbing diluent binds nonspecific antibodies not directed against T. pallidum.
