Captured in central Thailand, this historic image presents a young Thai girl positioned over the edge of a wooden boat dock behind her dwelling as she defecates into the adjacent waterway. The disposal of human waste directly into nearby streams was historically practiced in some rural communities but has largely been discontinued in modern Thailand. This photograph was taken during a public health field exercise focused on hookworm transmission.
