Captured in central Thailand, this historic image presents a freshwater environment whose surface is covered by water caltrops of the genus Trapa. The fruit and seeds of these plants may be consumed raw or cooked. When inadequately cooked, water caltrops can serve as a vehicle for transmission of the trematode parasite Fasciolopsis buski to humans, resulting in fasciolopsiasis approximately two to three months after ingestion.
