Captured in central Thailand, this historic image presents a mother and father with their child at a local stream. The father and son are standing in the water as the child consumes raw water caltrops gathered directly from the stream. Water caltrops are members of the genus Trapa. The fruit and seeds of these plants may be eaten raw or cooked; however, when inadequately prepared, they can serve as a vehicle for transmission of the trematode parasite Fasciolopsis buski to humans, resulting in fasciolopsiasis approximately two to three months after ingestion.
