Captured in central Thailand, this historic image presents the hands of a public health field worker holding freshly harvested water caltrops from their aquatic environment. Water caltrops are members of the genus Trapa. The fruit and seeds of these plants may be eaten raw or cooked; however, when inadequately prepared, they can serve as a vehicle for transmission of the trematode Fasciolopsis buski to humans, resulting in fasciolopsiasis approximately two to three months after ingestion.
