Caption:
This photomicrograph highlights microscopic morphological features of a Helicosporium fungal spore that had fallen onto a slide being processed during an ameba investigation. The organism contaminated the slide after the staining procedure and, like the amebae under study, did not retain the stain. Helicosporium spores are initially helical in morphology; however, upon drying, they assume a tightly coiled, spiral configuration.
