This image depicts four slant culture test tubes from a nutritional study, each containing casein vitamin-free agar. Tube 1 contains only the casein agar medium; Tube 2 contains the casein medium supplemented with inositol; Tube 3 contains the casein medium supplemented with thiamine; and Tube 4 contains the casein medium supplemented with both inositol and thiamine. Each tube was inoculated with the dermatophytic fungal organism Trichophyton verrucosum, designated strain 094, A-8. Note that the specimens in Tubes 1, 2, and 3 produced little to no colonial growth, whereas Tube 4 produced a moderate-sized colony when both inositol and thiamine were supplied as nutrients.
