This image depicts four slant culture test tubes from a nutritional study. Tube 1 contains casein agar only; Tube 2 contains casein agar supplemented with thiamine; Tube 3 contains Brener-casein medium; and Tube 4 contains Brener-casein medium supplemented with thiamine. Each tube was inoculated with the dermatophytic fungal organism Trichophyton tonsurans, designated strain 387-54, 094. Note that the specimens in Tubes 1 and 3 produced little to no colonial growth, whereas Tubes 2 and 4 produced moderate-sized woolly colonies, indicating T. tonsurans dependence on thiamine for growth.
