This illustration highlights the basic stages through which an insect passes as it matures after hatching from an egg, in this case a mosquito. Known as complete metamorphosis, these insects pass through a pupal stage during development. After emerging from the pupa, the insect matures into its adult form. This type of metamorphosis is also referred to as holometabolous development, or holometaboly.
