This photograph depicts three mosquito larvae suspended from the water’s surface as they obtain oxygen through the surface using their caudal siphon tubes. These larvae represent one of the developmental stages through which a mosquito passes on its way to becoming an adult flying insect. Mosquitoes undergo what is known as complete metamorphosis, entering a subsequent pupal stage before emerging as adult organisms. This process is also referred to as holometabolous development, or holometaboly.
