This photograph depicts a dorsal view of the distal abdomen of the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana, on the left, compared with that of the brown cockroach, Periplaneta brunnea, on the right, highlighting the cercal appendages of each organism. The cerci of P. americana are thinner and exhibit greater curvature than those of P. brunnea, which appear thicker and straighter.
