This image depicts a close view of a patient’s left eye, revealing some of the effects that leprosy, or Hansen’s disease, had upon the eye, and eyeball, which included madarosis, or loss of eyelashes, keratitis with corneal ulceration, clouding of the cornea, as well as episcleritis, and scleritis, or an inflammation of the sclera and its overlying layer. Leprosy is caused by the Gram-positive bacterium, Mycobacterium leprae.
