Caption:
This illustration depicted a man who was afflicted with a case of filariasis, which infected his lymphatic system, and had caused severe swelling, referred to as elephantiasis, of his lower extremities and scrotum. Lymphatic filariasis is a parasitic disease caused by mosquito-borne, thread-like filarial nematodes. These adult worms only live in the human lymphatic system, blocking the flow of lymph.
