This image depicted the elevated leg of a patient with a case of lymphatic filariasis (LF). Also referred to as elephantiasis, LF is a parasitic disease caused by mosquito-borne, thread-like filarial nematodes. These adult worms only live in the human lymphatic system, blocking the flow of lymph. Note the extreme swelling of the lower extremity, as well as the unhealthy, crusty appearance of the swollen leg’s overlying skin.
