Captured in Puerto Rico, this photograph depicted an anterior view of the lower extremities of a male lymphatic filariasis (LF) patient, highlighting the marked swelling of both legs, as well as the necrotic changes in the overlying skin. The right ankle region was wrapped, by what appeared to be a protective bandage. LF is a parasitic disease caused by mosquito-borne, thread-like filarial nematodes. These adult worms only live in the human lymphatic system, blocking the flow of lymph.
