Captured in Puerto Rico, this photograph depicted an anterior view of the lower extremities of a female lymphatic filariasis (LF) patient, highlighting the marked swelling of both legs. Note how that the legs were wrapped in compression stockings in order to reduce edema. LF is a parasitic disease caused by mosquito-borne, thread-like filarial nematodes. These adult worms only live in the human lymphatic system, where they block the flow of lymph.
