Captured in St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands (USVI), this photograph depicted an anterior view of the lower extremities of a female lymphatic filariasis (LF) patient, highlighting the marked swelling of both legs, though predominantly in her right leg. Note how the skin over her right ankle and foot had developed verrucous lesions atop the overlying skin. LF is a parasitic disease caused by mosquito-borne, thread-like filarial nematodes. These adult worms only live in the human lymphatic system, where they block the flow of lymph.
