Captured in Puerto Rico, this photograph depicted an anterior view of the lower torso and upper thighs of a male lymphatic filariasis (LF) patient. The image highlighted the presence of severe scrotal swelling, due to this parasitic disease. LF is caused by mosquito-borne, thread-like filarial nematodes. These adult worms only live in the human lymphatic system, where they block the flow of lymph.
