This photograph features a view of an excised section of intestine, and highlights some of the gross pathologic changes exhibited by the mucosal lining. This specimen had been extracted from a patient, who was ill with a case of amebiasis. Looking closely at the intestinal mucosa, you are able to see the severe ulcerative, erythematous reaction, due to the amebic infection. One of the ulcers had become perforated, demonstrated by having placed the tip of a forceps through the mural perforation.
