This photograph was captured during the Rhode Island polio epidemic and features an anterior view of a young girl, approximately 8 to 10 years old, being supported by Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer Dr. Joseph Oren, Chief of the Poliomyelitis Surveillance Unit at the Communicable Disease Center (CDC). The girl was reported to be the first polio case of 1960 and was diagnosed with residual kyphoscoliosis.
