This photomicrograph of a blood smear reveals both immature, and mature trophozoites of the Plasmodium vivax parasite. An immature trophozoite is shown at the top of the slide, in its characteristic ring shape, while the mature trophozoites contain large amoeboid cytoplasm, more chromatin, and though difficult to see in this image, fine yellowish brown pigment. All are stippled with what are referred to as Schüffner’s dots.
