This historic image was captured in 1962 in Atlanta, Georgia, during the nation’s Polio Eradication Campaign, and depicted former Epidemic Intelligence Officer (EIS), Donald A. Henderson, MD, MPH, interacting with a mother and her three children, who had made their way to this mobile polio vaccine unit so that the children could receive their oral polio vaccination. The vaccine would be administered by way of a polio vaccine imbibed sugar cube that each child would swallow. Dr. Henderson was a member of this mobile polio vaccination unit, and could therefore, move from place to place, making these polio vaccinations more accessible to the local families, and their polio-susceptible children.
