Captured in Puerto Rico in 1962 during a schistosomiasis field study, this image shows a grouping of Biomphalaria sp. snails situated atop an algal mat within a dried ditch. Two pens are placed adjacent to the snails for size reference. Also referred to as Australorbis, these snails serve as intermediate hosts for schistosomal parasites responsible for schistosomiasis in humans.
