Captured in Puerto Rico in 1962 during a schistosomiasis field study, this image shows Dr. Herbert F. Schoof (right), Dr. Frederick F. Ferguson (center), and an unidentified field worker preparing to collect snails from the surrounding environment. Dr. Ferguson was a former Chief of the Tropical Disease Section in the Ecological Investigations Program at the National Communicable Disease Center, Public Health Service (PHS), Bureau of Disease Prevention and Environmental Control, U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW), and was stationed at the USPHS Field Station in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Dr. Schoof was an expert in entomology and vector control.
