Captured in Puerto Rico in 1962 during a schistosomiasis field study, this image shows a posted warning sign indicating that the adjacent stream is contaminated with schistosomal parasites and that contact with the water is hazardous. Waterborne schistosome cercariae can penetrate the skin of individuals who come into contact with contaminated water, resulting in infection and the development of schistosomiasis.
