This image presents the results of a biochemical test used to determine whether an unidentified member of the bacterial family Enterobacteriaceae is present in the specimen. The test assesses whether malonate, the salt of malonic acid, is utilized as a carbon source; if so, sodium hydroxide and sodium bicarbonate are produced, causing the pH indicator bromthymol blue to change from green to blue. Note that the far-left tube contains a blue solution, indicating that the organisms therein utilized malonate as a nutrient source and produced a positive result.
