This historic 1960 image, depicted a hospitalized child that had been afflicted with polio during the Rhode Island Polio Epidemic. Here, Dr. Oren was examining the child, who was displaying signs of respiratory paralysis. A suction machine was being used, in conjunction with a tracheostomy tube to help in suctioning sputum build-up from the lungs.
